A: Dear Mallory,

Becoming a parent is both a wonderful and stressful experience—all at the same time! What I am hearing you say is that your mother is a great mom with great intentions, but you’re ready to pull your hair out! So, you need to verbalize how you feel in a positive manner to your mom. First, you need to talk to her. Take her to coffee or lunch. Tell her how much you appreciate how she raised you and the sacrifices she made which you are now aware of as you yourself are a mother.

Then, you need to let her know how you feel. Use statements such as, “I feel (fill in the blank) when you (fill in the blank).” Thank your mother for her input and ask her to allow you to step out on your own and utilize the principles she has instilled in you.
